Contrade are districts within the ancient Italian city of Siena. They are represented by colorful heraldic devices--this one is worked from the flag for the district of the "Crested Porcupine," in combination with a medieval illustration sent to me by a friend.
My mother often noted that my father and I always draw "mean eyes." I don't agree. I think it's "guileless" that I myself have a problem with. Sempé is pretty much the master of guileless.
I am fond of his early Le Petit Nicholas series (written by René Goscinny, and illustrated by Sempé). This illustration is taken from a New Yorker cover. My subscription has lapsed, & I am missing my weekly dose of clever cartooning.
